Even though I've been on countless trains around the world I've never done the Amtrak thing. Time to change that next weekend. A friend of mine once ordered a Round Table pizza in Winnemucca and had it delivered at the train station on this route..... Sounds like a plan!

Be aware that "on time" and Amtrak" are rarely found in the same paragraph. Nonetheless, on the NE corridor, the "train status" reports on 1-800-USA-RAIL (1-800-872-7245) are pretty good. Just don't order the pizza too early.

So I've heard.... I wonder if a "sleeper room" would be worth the additional hundred bucks?

No. Tried that once, There is still no shower, and your "seat" is by yourself. You have to go traveling the train to meet people.

It's better to be in the coach so you can make friends. Just hang out in the cafe car. Bring a set of cards. (For some reason, they are not allowed to sell them on the Adirondak - not sure if that's the case on the domestic trains.) Also bring ear plugs.

These all proved to be excellent suggestions. What I absolutely loved was sitting in the lounge car and watching the snowy mountains go by in the big windows. I could have done without the guy in my car talking to himself nonstop and accusing people of stealing his Michal Jackson CDs though.

Not quite the live jazz band in the good ole days of the Montrealer, but at least it's entertainment.  That's why you need the ear plugs or you MP3 player.
